The Princess and the Frog

I have to take a slight departure from my usual posts because I could not pass up an opportunity to tell you folks about Disney's newest animated flick, in theaters December 11, called The Princess and the Frog. The film marks Disney's FIRST Black lead character and is sure to follow in the footsteps of past classics The Little Mermaid (my personal favorite) and Aladdin. Blending themes of love and adventure laced with soul, Princess will captivate audiences with its soulful vibe and charming wonder in the backdrop of the Big Easy. Lending their voices to the film are Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, Jenifer Lewis, John Goodman, Jim Cummings, Terrence Howard and Oprah Winfrey. Check out the trailer below and mark your calendars!

This will be my Goddaugthers 3rd Disney film...thus far she has seen, Pocahantas and Mulan. I am so glad that disney is coming into THIS century. The disney franchise has FAR to strong of an influence over little girls NOT to provide a diverse array of role chracters. I only hope that disney will not (as in the past) stereotype the ethnic characters.

But i'm saying...why couldn't she have a black prince? Disney never portrayed interracial romance before as far as i know (with the exception of Pocohontas, which was based on revisionist historical "facts"). I guess they felt they had to "tone down the blackess" of the film to make more marketable. Love is blind and etc., but their choice to have their only black princess conspicuously have a non-black love interest makes me say hmmm. That said, I'm TOTALLY seeing this with my nieces when it comes out. I'm so happy they will have a disney princess who looks like them.
