The Trailer for "Rock of Ages" Commits 80s Music Sacrilege

I reckon the following trailer you're about to watch is what the people behind the Glee concert film were trying to do...but hopefully a little better than this.

Based on the hit Broadway musical, Rock of Ages unites a real random group of actors, including Paul Giamatti, Tom Cruise, Bryan Cranston, Mary J Blige, Malin Akerman and Alec Baldwin for a nostalgic trip back to 1987. Two young people meet and fall in love, but challenges ensue when their rock and roll ambitions get in the way.

Directed by Adam Shankman (known for the glorious flicks A Walk to Remember, The Wedding Planner, and 2007's Hairspray) Rock of Ages puts Cruise as rock star Stacee Jaxx (you'll see him in the Def Leppard wig in the clip) and Catherine Zeta-Jones as a Christian who isn't too fond of rocking or rolling (but, judging by the end of the clip, seems to get really into it).

Anyway, a bunch of randomness and cheesy dance numbers (and worst musical performances) seem to overtake this trailer. I imagine Julianne Hough is thrown in there from her growing dance movie resume (snooze). Hopefully they'll be better clips to come. This one isn't selling it to me. Rock of Ages hits theaters June 1, 2012.

The teaser actually had the exact opposite effect, I thought it was all very much tongue in cheek and looked kind of fun. Shankman did give Hairspray a crazy sense of energy, so I'm hopeful for this one.
