Right off the bat, this movie is selling me on the cast alone.
Relativity Media announced today that Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Zoe Saldana, and Sam Shepard (most recently seen in Safe House) will headline director Scott Cooper's (Crazy Heart) Out of the Furnace.
According to the press release, the film is "a drama about fate, circumstance, and redemption. Russell (Bale) and his younger brother (Affleck) live in the economically depressed Rust Belt, and have always dreamed of escaping and finding better lives. But when a cruel twist of fate lands Russell in prison, his brother is lured into one of the most violent and ruthless crime rings in the Northeast—a mistake that will almost cost him everything. Once released, Russell must chose between his own freedom, or risk it all to seek justice for his brother.”
Saldana will star as Bale's love interest, and Shepard will play the brothers' uncle.
Another cool tidbit: Leonardo DiCaprio is one of six people named as a producer of the film. Other high profile producers are Ridley Scott (The Grey) and Tony Scott (Man on Fire).
I wasn't much a fan of Crazy Heart, so already that's a red alert for me. But the rest of the cast sounds good. I just hope Saldana isn't resorted to playing some damsel in distress. We all know she can kick ass with the rest of the boys. Other than that, the film seems like it could be good. Nothing that really reinvents the wheel, but something that could be at least entertaining.
What do you think? Will you watch? Out of the Furnace is scheduled to come to theaters sometime in 2014
