It's a Bird! It's a Plane! No, it's Superman (Again)

Superhero movies are really stepping up their game lately, The Green Lantern and The Green Hornet aside (though I found those entertaining, regardless). They're more than just a man with superlative physical efforts saving kidnapped babies; they're becoming real think pieces with provocative plot lines.

So the upcoming Superman movie has a lot to live up to and compete with when it's once again rebooted for the masses next year. The upcoming prequel, which simply goes by the superhero's moniker, Man of Steel, stars Henry Cavill (Immortals) as Clark Kent himself. He is joined by an all star cast featuring Russell Crowe as Clark's biological dad, Jor-El, Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as his adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan, Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Laurence Fishburne as Clark's boss and Editor in Chief of the Daily Planet newspaper.

Legendary Pictures sums up the film like this:

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond his imagination. Transported years ago to Earth from Krypton, a highly advanced, distant planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question 'Why am I here?' Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark discovers having extraordinary abilities means making difficult decisions. When the world is in dire need of stability, an even greater threat emerges. Clark must become a Man of Steel, to protect the people he loves and shine as the world's beacon of hope - Superman.

Well, this could be good, if it's as intriguing as the synopsis, except I don't even remember Cavill in Immortals, so there's that. But, the word on the street is that this role may really put him on the map. I'll reserve judgment until I see that happen. The rest of the cast is pretty top notch. However, I am in the minority of those who love Adams (I think she's really hit or miss), but I do think she is really staying in her lane in this role of geek chic redhead Lois. But imagine what someone like Isle Fisher could have brought to that role? Oh well.

Also, director Zack Snyder hopes to reclaim his good name with this movie. I hear it was a bit tarnished after last year's critically panned Sucker Punch. It also helps that the great Christopher has a producer credit here, so it can't be that bad...can it?

After countless resurrections, I hope they get this one right. The last few tries were lackluster, to say the least. But, it does seem like the prequel route has been proving successful in the superhero world. We'll see how this one goes when it swoops into theaters June 14th, 2013.

Check out the first released clip below, which seems enticing enough, but certainly doesn't give enough away to get a real reaction out of it:

I've never really cared for Superman, but the fact that Christopher Nolan is producing has me intrigued. I like to think that he wouldn't put his name on something that will suck.

Never been a favorite of mine, character wise but I do like Henry Cavill and Snyder even with Sucker Punch being his most recent film. Trailer doesn't do much for me though.

Not a huge Snyder fan, but this looks gorgeous. Malick-esque trailer, which is great. Not a huge fan of Superman as a character, but some of the movies are solid. I think this will be a highlight of 2013.
