Hold on to your hats, folks, because here comes another episode of I Don't Know What's Going On in This Trailer, But It Sure is Beautiful to Look At.
Tonight we bring you Cloud Atlas, which basically follows intertwining stories of characters as they travel throughout the past, present and future, and ponder life's toughest existential questions. So to speak.
The actual synopsis from the movie website reads as follows: "Cloud Atlas" explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future.
Thankfully that latter sentence is included in the synopsis, because you won't find too much evidence of it in the trailer. At least, not on a first watch. The thing is, there is such more going on in this nearly 6-minute clip that it's very easy to lose some of its meaning as you suffer from A-list whiplash from scene to scene (Halle Berry, Tom Hanks, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent, and James D'Arcy, are just a few of the stars packed into this one film).
The idea, however presented, is certainly there and could be great if it's executed well. Not everyone can do interwoven stories, but it's an exquisite technique if left in the right hands. Luckily Andy and Lana Wachowski (most famous for the Matrix trilogy) directed and co-wrote the project (adapted from David Mitchell's 2004 novel of the same name), so we should expect something thrilling and provocative as the final product.
For now, we can gaze at the trailer and try to pick up several different meanings from it as it takes us on a very quite emotional roller coaster.
Cloud Atlas hits theaters October 26th.
