This is another film that just doesn't look exciting to me. Maybe because there are just too many films like it around. But I am hoping it's one of those movies for which the trailer dumbly doesn't do it any justice.
It's director Allen Hughes (one of of the filmmaker duo The Hughes Brothers, with his brother Albert, who brought us films like From Hell and The Book of Eli) returns with his newest action flick, Broken City. And suiting up for a role he's become quite familiar with these days is Mark Wahlberg, who plays an ex-cop hired to trail the mayor's (Russell Crowe) shady (?) wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones). More on the movie after the jump:
In a Broken City rife with injustice, ex-cop Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) seeks redemption–and revenge–after being double-crossed and then framed by its most powerful figure, the mayor (Russell Crowe). Billy’s relentless pursuit of justice, matched only by his streetwise toughness, makes him an unstoppable force–and the mayor’s worst nightmare.”
It's sounds more like the film is about the two men, even though Zeta-Jones waltzes through the screen several times in dangerously alluring glimpses. I'm sure this will end up with one of them being thrown either off a building or shot in cold blood. That's just a hunch though.
Crowe looks like he may be in the midst of redefining himself as an actor, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But I think counteracting this film with a film like, say, the Oscar bait Les Miserables, is probably not unintentional.
If anything, it looks like an entertaining movie, even if it's standard. Thoughts on the trailer? Broken City hits theaters January 13, 2013.
