You've gotta hand it to Marvel for trying to keep the Iron Man franchise fresh and relevant. I know a lot of folks panned the 2010 sequel, which I didn't mind. But people LOVED the first movie.
And just like the 2010 film, the latest trailer for Iron Man 3 features a handful of big names that will play Tony Stark's (Robert Downey, Jr.) main antagonists--Guy Pearce (as Aldrich Killian) and Ben Kinglsey (as The Mandarin). Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle also reprise their roles as Tony's main squeeze Pepper Potts and his ally James Rhodes/War Machine.
Downey Jr.'s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang director Shane Black reunites with the actor on this latest project (which he also wrote), resuming the reigns left behind by former helmer Jon Favreau and writer Justin Theroux.
Here's the full synopsis of the new movie (from ComingSoon.Net):
Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce and Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of Tales of Suspense (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with The Invincible Iron Man (#1) in May of 1968.
Iron Man 3 is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures and DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing and Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee and Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film releases May 3, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
The trailer doesn't exactly give me goosebumps, but I know fanboys are losing their minds over it, so I guess it would be cool to say it's great. It's ok.
The best part about it seems to be the addition of Pearce, Kinglsey, and Hall. It will be interesting to see what they bring to the mix. Though I'm sure Downey Jr. aims to please with his third (or technically fourth, if you count The Avengers) stint as the superhero. It's clear he still enjoys suiting up for the role, even when the story goes down a darker path. If you need evidence of that, may I remind you of this video? Right.
In any case, Iron Man 3 blasts into theaters May 3, 2013.
