Cinema in Noir Talks to "Boyz 'N the Hood" Actress Alysia Rogers About Her Gritty New Film

After being off the air for two weeks to recover from Hurricane Sandy, Cinema in Noir returned this weekend. We got a chance to catch up with Alysia Rogers (pictured above), aka Ricky's (Morris Chestnut) baby's mother Shanice from the 1991 classic Boyz 'N the Hood, about her twenty -year absence from the big screen and her new role in the short film, Beyond Merritt.

In the film, which is based on a true story, Rogers will play the title character Lynda Merritt, a drug-addicted mother who fights the odds to win back custody of her three children. A little more on Beyond Merritt after the jump:

Beyond Merritt, is the true life story about Lynda Merritt, a mother of three young children, who fell in the grips of drug abuse, and struggled to save herself and her family. Lost between her addiction and recovery, Lynda takes you on an intimate and heart-wrenching journey of a mother who loses it all but in the end, gains the courage to fight and never gives up hope. Overcoming loss and tragedy of the worst kind, including the unexpected death of a child, this film reveals how one drug addicted mother faced her worst nightmare and beat the odds.

Rogers discusses what drew her to the role and the impact Boyz 'N the Hood still has on audiences today. She also chats about Hollywood's perception of black actresses, particularly those with darker skin.

On the show we also talk about the latest in casting news--including which Bridesmaids actress has signed on to star in the next Tyler Perry flick Single Moms Club, and the upcoming drama The Last Fall actress Nicole Beharie will star in next, alongside Hailee Steinfeld and Olivia Wilde.
