8 Trailers You May Have Missed in 2013

Happy New Year, readers! With all the attention given to award nominees and other high-profile films last month, many of the smaller films went unnoticed. So, for your viewing pleasure, I've compiled a list of trailers and synopses of films you may have missed over these last crazy few weeks:

SOME VELVET MORNING

SYNOPSIS: Fred (Stanley Tucci) arrives at the doorstep of his beautiful young mistress Velvet (Alice Eve) after four years apart, claiming to have finally left his wife. But when she rejects his attempts to rekindle their romance, his persistence evolves into obsession — and a dark history between the former lovers comes into focus. A return to form for writer/director Neil LaBute (IN THE COMPANY OF MEN, YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS), SOME VELVET MORNING is an astutely written portrait of a very modern romance.

*Available on VOD and iTunes, and in select theaters.*

S#X ACTS

SYNOPSIS: Naïve teen Gili (Sivan Levy) changes schools and is determined to improve her social status by hooking up with the most popular guys. But as she pushes her own limits with every new encounter — offering a succession of sexual favors and allowing herself to be photographed and filmed — the line of consent begins to blur. Israeli filmmaker Jonathan Gurfinkel's provocative debut is raw, racy, and immediately recognizable.

*Available on iTunes and nationwide VOD and in select theaters.*

THE TRUTH ABOUT EMANUEL

SYNOPSIS: Emanuel (Kaya Scodelario), a troubled girl, becomes preoccupied with her mysterious, new neighbor (Jessica Biel), who bears a striking resemblance to her deceased mother. In offering to babysit her newborn, Emanuel unwittingly enters a fragile, fictional world, of which she becomes the gatekeeper.

*Available on iTunes and nationwide VOD and in select theaters beginning January 10th.*

EXPECTING

SYNOPSIS: After years of struggling to conceive with her husband, Lizzie (Radha Mitchell, OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN) has given up hope of having a baby on her own. But when her best friend Andie (Michelle Monaghan, SOURCE CODE) finds herself pregnant after a one-night stand, an unexpected solution arises: Andie offers to have the baby and give it to Lizzie. The couple agrees to the plan, on one condition: Andie must move in with them for the duration of the pregnancy. But can the women's friendship survive until birth? Jessie McCormack's debut is a refreshingly candid comedy about planning ahead for life's unexpected detours.

*Available on iTunes and nationwide VOD and in select theaters.*

THE BOXTROLLS

SYNOPSIS: The new 3D stop-motion and CG hybrid animated feature is a comedic fable that unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class, and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least, that’s the legend residents have always believed. In truth, the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells. The Boxtrolls have raised an orphaned human boy, Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead-Wright), since infancy as one of their dumpster-diving and mechanical junk-collecting own. When the Boxtrolls are targeted by villainous pest exterminator Archibald Snatcher (Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley), who is bent on eradicating them as his ticket to Cheesebridge society, the kindhearted band of tinkerers must turn to their adopted charge and adventurous rich girl Winnie (Elle Fanning) to bridge two worlds amidst the winds of change – and cheese.

*In theaters September 26th.*

THE SQUARE

SYNOPSIS: Jehane Noujaim’s gripping front-line portrait of the Egyptian revolution is set to premiere exclusively in all Netflix territories on January 17, 2014 at 12:01 AM PT and in select cities within the United States. A Netflix original documentary, “The Square,” is a riveting, deeply human chronicle of the Egyptian protest movement from director/producer Jehane Noujaim (“Control Room”; “Startup.com”; “Rafea: Solar Mama”) and producer Karim Amer (“Rafea: Solar Mama”).

Winner of this year’s Best Documentary Award at 2013 International Documentary Awards, the Best Documentary at the Dubai International Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival Documentary People’s Choice Award and the Audience Award at the Montreal International Documentary Festival, “The Square” is an epic documentary that tells the behind-the-headlines story of the Egyptian Revolution through the eyes of young activists who have sought for the last two years to build a better Egypt. An earlier version of “The Square” won the Audience Award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. The film was also an Official Selection at the 2013 New York Film Festival.

The film captures the immediacy and intensity of the protests in Tahrir Square from the 2011 overthrow of military leader Hosni Mubarak through the ousting of Mohammed Morsi in 2013, providing a kaleidoscopic, visceral portrait of the events as they unfold before Magdy, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, Khalid Abdalla, an Egyptian actor who played the lead in “The Kite Runner” and the charismatic Ahmed, whose poetic storytelling carries the narrative. Armed with nothing more than cameras, social media, deep consciousness, and a resolute commitment to change, these young revolutionaries give us a front-line perspective of the ongoing struggle fought with new weapons.

*Premieres exclusively in all Netflix territories on January 17th at 12:01 AM PT and in select cities within the United States.*

LEGENDS OF OZ: DOROTHY'S RETURN

SYNOPSIS: Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return is a 3D-animated musical based on the adventure books by Roger Stanton Baum, the great-grandson of L. Frank Baum. A continuation of one of the world’s most popular and beloved fairy tales, Legends of Oz finds Dorothy (Lea Michele) waking to post-tornado Kansas, only to be whisked back to Oz to try to save her old friends the Scarecrow (Dan Aykroyd), the Lion (Jim Belushi), the Tin Man (Kelsey Grammer) and Glinda (Bernadette Peters) from a devious new villain, the Jester (Martin Short). Wiser the owl (Oliver Platt), Marshal Mallow (Hugh Dancy), China Princess (Megan Hilty) and Tugg the tugboat (Patrick Stewart) join Dorothy on her latest magical journey through the colorful landscape of Oz to restore order and happiness to Emerald City. Set to the tunes of Academy Award-nominated singer/songwriter Bryan Adams, Legends of Oz marks a charming, family-friendly return to the Oz franchise.

*In theaters May 9th.*

RAZE

SYNOPSIS: Stuntwoman-turned-action-star Zoë Bell (Death Proof) headlines this sly subversion of the women-in-prison genre. When Sabrina is mysteriously abducted, she finds herself in an underground lair, forced to do battle with other innocents for the amusement of unseen spectators. Each of these reluctant warriors has something to lose, but only one will remain when the game is done. Violent and relentless, Raze takes its video game aesthetic to the deepest and darkest places, rarely surfacing for air.

After showcasing her amazing physicality and tough-as-nails persona in films and television, Tarantino muse Zoë Bell finally has a film to call her own, filled with bloodshed and mayhem of the highest order. With a cast of who’s-who genre favorites, including Sherilyn Fenn (“Twin Peaks”) and a rare performance sans prosthetics from Guillermo Del Toro mainstay Doug Jones (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth), Raze announces its extreme intentions from the very first frame. Director Josh C. Waller has created a terrifying world of savagery in which nothing is what it seems.

*IFC Midnight will release RAZE on January 10th.*
