Watch a New Clip from the Animated Film 'MR. PEABODY & SHERMAN', From the Director of 'THE LION KING'

Here's a movie that is sure to a topic of conversation for many audiences. 20th Century Fox is releasing MR. PEABODY & SHERMAN, a new animated film that follows a precocious young boy named Sherman who triggers a wondrous series of events through the time machine he shares with his dog Mr. Peabody. While trying to impress a girl named Penny with the machine, he rips a hole in the universe that upsets the order of world history. From there, the trio sets about trying to fix what they broke, while traveling through various moments in history.

As this is a film targeted toward children and families, I'd expect they won't get too deep into heavier themes and subjects like war and politics (note the Cleopatra-like headdress in the image above). It could be a fun film for kids who are really interested in history. But, according to the press notes, the story predominantly highlights the "father and son" relationship between Mr. Peabody and Sherman (yes, Mr. Peabody is a dog but apparently Sherman is his adopted son).

Ty Burrell (Modern Family) provides the voice of Mr. Peabody, while Max Charles (The Neighbors) and Ariel Winter (also of Modern Family) lend their voices to Sherman and Penny. Lake Bell (who proved she's got one of the most chameleon-like voices in In a World...last year) also provides voice-over, along with Stanley Tucci, Leslie Mann, Allison Janney, Mel Brooks, Dennis Haysbert, and Stephen Colbert--some of whom play various figures in history. Director Rob Minkoff (The Lion King, Stuart Little and The Haunted Mansion) helmed the project written by Craig Wright (most known for his TV credits, including Six Feet Under and Lost).

More on the film in the official synopsis after the jump:

Mr. Peabody, the most accomplished dog in the world, and his mischievous boy Sherman, use their time machine - The WABAC - to go on the most outrageous adventures known to man or dog. But when Sherman takes The WABAC out for a joyride to impress his friend Penny, they accidentally rip a hole in the universe, wreaking havoc on the most important events in world history. Before they forever alter the past, present and future, Mr. Peabody must come to their rescue, ultimately facing the most daunting challenge of any era: figuring out how to be a parent. Together, the time traveling trio will make their mark on history.
