The First Trailer for MALADIES, Starring James Franco: "You Don't Need Any Help Thinking Abstractly, James"

This goes back to what I was writing about on Monday--you never know what you're going to get with James Franco. Ever. Which brings us to MALADIES, a film in which the actor stars as an unstable creative soul living in a 1960s New York.

It's always being said that some of the best geniuses suffer from their own broken realities, and this films seems to be another exploration of that. Co-starring Catherine Keener, David Strathairn and Alan Cumming, the film also follow in the footsteps of truncated success stories found in recent films such as Inside Llewyn Davis and Frances Ha. But what's perhaps most interesting about MALADIES is that it's written and directed Carter, the mononymous filmmaker who is mostly known for working with Franco previously in the 2010, Erased James Franco (which sounds like Franco's version of I'm Still Here, starring Joaquin Phoenix).

Here's the synopsis:

A daring new film from internationally acclaimed multimedia artist Carter, MALADIES charts the struggles of an unstable former soap opera star (James Franco) in 1960’s New York as he tries to restart his floundering creative career. Hoping to find clarity and new purpose as a writer, he holes up with his eccentric sister (Fallon Goodson) at the seaside home of their best friend (Catherine Keener). But as he disappears further into his own mind, reality begins to slip through his grasp. Featuring an award-winning ensemble, including David Strathairn and Alan Cumming, MALADIES is a heartfelt but defiantly unconventional exploration of the creative mind.

It actually looks pretty interesting (despite the somewhat odd looking poster). Check out the first trailer:

MALADIES will open in select theaters beginning March 21st, and will be available nationwide on VOD and iTunes on March 25th.
