Guys, I'm really having a hard time understanding Cameron Diaz's career these days. Granted, I can't say she's been a particularly compelling actress since she first burst onto the big screen alongside Jim Carrey in The Mask twenty years ago, but I did once think she showed potential in her more daring films like Vanilla Sky (I know, it's not the greatest movie but I've always admired it for its ambition). I even once described her as underrated. Once.
But if Diaz has her way she'll see to it that I never make that mistake again. Having recently seen her simulate sex with a convertible in The Counselor, and in the godawful trailer for The Other Woman, I'd say that she's gone past the point of no return. She's become all sex appeal and no substance--a 40+ California blonde whose onscreen charm and good looks have carried her farther than we all expected. And she seems okay with that, since she's one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood. So she's obviously doing something right. She continues that streak with her upcoming film, SEX TAPE, a comedy co-starring a noticeably slimmer Jason Segel that looks exactly how it sounds.
As we learn in the trailer, Diaz and Segel play Annie and Jay, a couple desperately looking to spice up their relationship. So Annie has the bright idea to create a sex tape and Jay is all too psyched for it. But something most of us know about sex tapes is that they always find a way of going public, which is what happens here. And
When Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) first got together, their romantic connection was intense – but ten years and two kids later, the flame of their love needs a spark. To kick things up a notch, they decide – why not? – to make a video of themselves trying out every position in The Joy of Sex in one marathon three-hour session. It seems like a great idea – until they discover that their most private video is no longer private. With their reputations on the line, they know they’re just one click away from being laid bare to the world... but as their race to reclaim their video leads to a night they'll never forget, they'll find that their video will expose even more than they bargained for.
I told you it was pretty basic. Check out the red band trailer, which also features Rob Lowe, Rod Corddry and Ellie Kemper:
SEX TAPE is in theaters July 25th.
