I know it probably shouldn't, but Expendables has always held a special place in my heart. Perhaps it's the nostalgic ode to the 80s action genre, or maybe it's the quasi-restoration of action giants Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jet Li, or maybe it's because I can't get enough of watching semi-geriatric dudes smash each other's faces in for two whole hours. But I'm not apologizing for it.
So you can just imagine how irrationally excited I am for the third installment of this vicious C-franchise, simply titled EXPENDABLES 3 (or, as it will be known on twitter: #EX3). The familiar team of mercenaries from the first two films (Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews and Arnold Schwarzenegger) have reconvened for another adventure, and are this time joined by similarly vintage additions Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Kelsey Grammer, Harrison Ford, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Victor Ortiz, and Glen Powell. Start collecting your action figurines now, kids.
As revealed in the synopsis below, Gibson will play the fallen hero trying to take down the fellas one by one in the new film, which hits theaters August 15th. More:
In THE EXPENDABLES 3, Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables -- but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.
Eek! This could either be epic or massively ridiculous, or maybe a little bit of both. But I am here for the foolery, so bring it. Plus, we get Desparado himself battle it out with Frasier, Blade, Indiana Jones and...the Twilight guy? LOL, how ridiculous..and how awesome. At the very least, we may get to see Lutz be clobbered by a tag team of men that are double his age (or older). That alone is worth the price of a movie ticket.
