I kinda thought this whole B-horror movie of the week thing would have died with Syfy's sleeper hit, Sharknado, last year. Though I sure did not expect its success and forthcoming sequel (now I wonder why the similarly mediocre film, Mansquito, wasn't a bigger hit). So now Animal Planet is jumping on the awful made for TV horror movie bandwagon with a real winner that pits fallen 90s idol Shannen Doherty against a bunch of slimy sewer dwellers.
*pauses for reaction*
BLOOD LAKE: ATTACK OF THE KILLER LAMPREYS, unsurprisingly from the creators of Sharnado, is part of the network's third annual Monster Week to be aired May 18-26 along with other scheduled monster programming. And, boy, does is look like a doozy. Read the synopsis:
BLOOD LAKE: ATTACK OF THE KILLER LAMPREYS, from the creators of Sharknado, serves as a frightening reminder that monsters come in all shapes and sizes and can attack when you least expect. Actors Shannen Doherty (90210), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future) and Jason Brooks (Days of Our Lives) star in the thriller set in small-town Michigan, where lampreys terrorize the residents, and each dip in the pool or trip to the toilet turns into a life-or-death situation. Looking for their next blood-filled victim, lampreys, which are eel-like fish with huge-toothed, funnel-like mouths, insinuate their slimy bodies throughout the town’s sewer system. There is absolutely nowhere to run, and no one is safe. When are they going to strike next? Who’s the next victim? The only thing you can be sure of is that it’s going to suck – big time!
OMG Christopher Lloyd got snaked into doing this too. But you know what? I bet this movie will spawn some amazing tweets (which will prove that people will most definitely be watching this, if even just to
secretly love it make fun of it). I feel like I'm the last Doherty fan left on the planet, so I may likely support so I can stop fearing that her career ended when she left Charmed (I understand it might have, but I've been in denial). But the film will only be worth it if Lloyd starts aimlessly shouting quotes from Back to the Future as he's dodging giant fish. Then I'll know it's fate.
