If you have anyone other than Bradford Young winning best cinematography on your Oscar pool or ballot, then you're doing it wrong. I have been in awe of his work for the past 5 years, ever since Restless City in 2011, for which he made every scene look like a gorgeous mural. He later followed that up with, among other films, the exquisitely shot Mother of George, Selma, and A Most Violent Year. And it's about time the academy shows him some respect for creating creating easily one of the most immersive cinematic experiences this year in the sci-fi drama, Arrival.
While I wasn't the biggest fan of the film, I would watch it again if only for the cinematography. And I'm happy to see here in this featurette that stars Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner are also part of Young's fan club.
Fingers crossed, I see his name on Oscar nominations list.
